Common Christmas Stains and How to Tackle Them

Posted on by admin

When it’s the festive season, parties and visitors mean that your carpets and upholstery are in danger from spills and stains. The secret is to act quickly before the stains set in, and then to have them tackled by professionals, such as ‘The Stain Busters’. Here are five top tips on how to combat some common Christmas spillages:

Red Wine

If red wine spills, it is vital to treat it swiftly before the stain sets. Keep the stain wet by spraying water on it, and then blot up as much as possible using an old tea towel or dish cloth. Work from the outside edges inward to prevent the stain from spreading.

Adding a thick layer of salt to the stain is another method to prevent it from setting before our professionals can treat it.

Chocolate

Mix a small amount of washing-up liquid with some warm water and apply the solution with a sponge. Try and work the bubbly mixture into the stain to try and lift as much of the chocolate as possible.

Coffee

A large brown coffee stain is something that you don’t want on your carpet, especially if it’s a light-coloured carpet! Mix bicarbonate of soda with warm water to make a thick paste and apply a thick layer to the stain and leave. Then, use a stiff brush to work the stain out of the carpet.

Creamy Dips

Blot the spillage with a paper towel to remove the creamy dip from the carpet or sofa. Use some rubbing alcohol on some cotton wool to treat the rest of the stain. Finally, apply a mixture of white wine vinegar and water to the stain, which should help to remove any garlicky odour.

Fruit Juice

Children are great at knocking over glasses of fruit juice onto carpets and sofas. Scrape off any pulp then flush the stain with cold water and blot dry. Add a touch of ammonia -as per instructions- to a solution of warm water and gently work the stain with a sponge.
